This year is the centenary year of the birth of Dr. Paul Brand. He was born on the 17th of July, 1914.
The Chaplaincy Department and Friends of Vellore, UK jointly organised a celebration of the Birth Centenary of Dr. Paul Brand on July 17, 2014.
During the Special Thanksgiving Service held in the Hospital Chapel, Rev. Canon Dr. Isaac Poobalan, Rector of St. John?s Church, Aberdeen gave the message remembering the life and ministry of Dr. Paul Brand and Dr.(Mrs.) Margaret Brand.
A symposium was held in the Grace Koshy Hall,ASHA Building on ‘Pain – A Blessed Suffering’. The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy gave the inaugural talk at the symposium . A part of the video, ‘Hearts for the Outcastes’ – the story of Dr. Paul Brand and Dr.(Mrs.) Margaret Brand, was screened for the participants.
Approximately 70 people from different disciplines actively participated in the symposium. Dr. Paul Brand?s unique contribution of understanding pain as a gift from God was discussed.
CMC is planning a couple of other events later in the year.
On 8th August, during the Alumni Weekend, we have invited the author Philip Yancey to deliver the Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration as a special tribute to Paul Brand. Philip Yancey knew Dr. Brand well and collaborated with him on several books including “The Gift of Pain.” Three of Paul Brand’s daughters and members of their families will be joining us then.
From 4th to 6th September the Dr Paul Brand Centre for Hand Surgery (used to be called Hand and Leprosy Reconstructive Surgery Department) are hosting a National Hand Surgery conference here. They are inaugurating a Dr. Paul Brand Oration, which this year will be delivered by Prof. Jan Fridén, an internationally renowned figure in hand surgery from Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Goteborg, Sweden.
